Morton's Soccer School - News Archive

18-11-09: 2010 - 100 years of SHSC
Soccer School director Ken Morton has again signed with South Hobart to coach the senior side in the club's centenary year. Ken remains well supported by the other soccer school coaches including the well like Mr. Jin from Korea who has been working with the MSS boys over the last few weeks. A picture of Ken and Glenn Fontana - Wollongong Wolves Coach, Liverpool and Fulham scout - is below. Fingers crossed that all that experience can bring in the threepeat in the club's 100th year.

7-11-09: MSS training to move to Domain Crossroads
Just a reminder that as the senior South Hobart ground will be undergoing annual maintenance/recovery from this week, the soccer school will be moving to the Crossroads grounds at the domain for the remainder of the year. As we are now on daylight savings and do not require the light, normal times will apply.

29-10-09: Hugo's Melbourne Victory
Check out the great photos of Hugo Bladel training with the Melbourne Victory Youth team. For Hugo's Year 10 work experience at Taroona High School, Ken arranged the placement with Les Bee who is the Victorian Federations Technical Director and Ian Greener at the VIS men's football programme.

Hugo had a fantastic time and dad Richard was also made to feel welcome, undertaking a course with 50-odd other coaches about the 4 3 3 method of playing, not to mention being invited alongto the Oman Australia game.

21-08-09: Korean Youth Match updates
A good crowd was present at South Hobart on Thursday afternoon for the first two matches of the Korean Youth trip to Tasmania. In the match against South Hobart Red, the Korean team proved too strong and were clear 5-0 winners despite a wholehearted effort including some excellent play by the young boys in this squad. The same Korean squad of 20 was then called upon to play the White team, and found themselves 2-0 down after only a few minutes, but fought back to threaten throughout the first half going to the break at 0-3. In the second half a tiring Korean team conceded further goals, but got on the scoresheet courtesy of a penalty kick: final score 10-1. A mixed Red-White team will be facing a refreshed Korean unit today at 2.30 at the same ground and it should be a close encounter, so come along if you can make it. Photos from the day are in the gallery with more to come.

18-08-09: Korean Youth Football Association team visit
On the 20th and 21st of August (this Thursday and Friday) a representative team from the Korean Youth Football Association will play the Tasko cup against MSS representative teams. Read more information on the cup, the Tasmanian squads for the matches and the ongoing relationship between Tasmanian and Korean football here.

17-08-09: MSS training arrangements
The big wet is still taking its toll, and MSS training for this week will start at Cornelian Bay from 4-5.30ish, and then revert to South Hobart (D'Arcy St) on Thursday at the usual time.

13-07-09: Ground closures and training
The ground at Darcy St is still closed, so MSS will again be at Cornelian Bay from 4pm-dark on Tuesday and Thursday. Team u14 training is cancelled for Mon night and will be 5-6.30pm on Wed at Lower Queenborough under lights.

12-07-09: Weekend results
Good results again for the MSS-related teams with the u14 team winning 3-0 and the div1 and div2 u15 teams winning 3-1 and drawing 3-3 respectively. Given the poor conditions on the weekend at Wellesley Park where all these games were played, these were good results and leave all 3 teams in prime positions to win their divisions.

04-07-09: South Hobart ground closed
The ground at Darcy St is closed this week, so MSS will be transferred to Cornelian Bay on Tuesday and Thursday. Training will also be from 4-5.30pm as there are no lights. Please let as many school members know as you can.

01-07-09: Team training changes
A number of changes are planned for the Monday and Wednesday MSS team training sessions from next week. In order to focus more on each team individually, training will now be split with the u14 squad training 4.30-6 on Mondays and 4.15-5.45 on Wednesdays at D'Arcy St, while the u15s will train from 5-7 on Mondays at West Hobart Oval and from 6-7.30 on Wednesdays at Darcy St. Please also note there will be no training today for either team (Wed 1/7) due to a seniors game. MSS training on Tuesdays and Thursdays in unaffected.

30-06-09: Who's got the legs?
A piece of the puzzle behind why our boys pull off so many great second half performances was revealed on Tuesday as many of the MSS squad travelled to Symmons Plains for the annual intrastate cross country tournament. 5 of the u14 team placed in the top 30 (Sam Ross 2nd, Conor Brownless 5th, Digby Ayton 16th, Lachlan Fraser 17th and Josh Williamson 24th), while 2 of the u15s made the top 30 in their age division (Maxim Devine 13th, Will Howcroft 20th). Well done to all who competed.

17-06-09: No u14 MSS game this Sunday
The latest news is that Clarence White have withdrawn from the u14 knockout cup and as a result the u14 MSS team has another bye this Sunday. Also, don't forget about the Earthquake appeal fundraiser this Friday night.

14-06-09: MSS Cancellations
Both training sessions this week (Tuesday 16th and Thursday 18th June) have been cancelled due to ground closures. Catch up sessions will be scheduled later in the year. School will now recommence on Tuesday 23rd June).

09-06-09: L’Aquila Earthquake Appeal
The Abruzzo Association of Hobart is raising money for victims of the devastating Italian earthquake.

A charity event is being held on Friday 19th June at the Hobart Town Hall Ballroom. Entry is only $25 per person and the entertainment on offer includes:

• Performances by members of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra of works by Vivaldi, Rossini, Tosti and Abruzzese songs
• A recitation of Ovid
• Raffles and a Silent Auction

Guests on the night will include the Premier, the Hobart City Mayor and members of the Italian Community whose families have been directly touched by the earthquake.

Donations are also being accepted at the Hobart Council Centre.

24-05-09: Reflected glory
As a new FFA initiative, the inaugural Australian Football Awards are being held on 11 June 2009. A handful of prestigious awards are being decided including Australian player of the year, and coach of the year. In the latter category, the winner will come from one of 8 state and territory coach of the year winners, and the Tasmanian nominee is none other than soccer school director Ken Morton, for his sensational work last year with the u13 red South Hobart title winning team (and a handful of senior titles, etc). This would be a great reward for Ken's exceptional work across all levels of football in Tasmania last year, and I'm sure you'll all join in wishing Ken the best of luck for the final.

23-05-09: MSS teams roll on
Another solid week for the MSS sides, with the u15 div 1 side getting home in a thriller against the Tilford Zebras White at the Showgrounds. Leading 2-1 at half time, the Zebras fought back to equalise and then take the lead before Max's second brought the teams back to 3-3 and Ollie Maxwell made it 4-3 with the final kick of the game to edge home. Meanwhile the other u15 South Hobart side with soccer school players James Wilson and Angus Oakford, showed their superior fitness after being 3-0 up at half time against New Norfolk to ease away to a 12-0 victory. With 8 separate goal scorers including 4 to Nick and 3 to Connor, it was a comprehensive all round performance. Finally in the u14 division, the MSS side were too classy for Metro, winning 5-0 at North Chigwell. A close game up until half time (1-0), South played quality football through much of the second half to deserve the win.

20-05-09: It's a knockout (updated)
The youth knockout cup starts this Sunday with qualifying rounds, however the MSS u14 and u15 squads have byes straight through to the round of 16 on 21 June. You can view the u14 cup draw and the u15 cup draw on the FFT web site. Speaking of knockouts, training was a hit last night with the school celebrating the Director's birthday - another year to the good Ken :)

10-05-09: MSS squads set the early pace
Three weeks into the season and the MSS u14 and u15 teams are both leading their respective competitions with full points from fixtures thus far. The u15s had a big win this weekend 12-1 over Glenorchy Knights with Max Clarke slotting home 6 of the goals. This matched the performance of the u14 team the previous week against New Town with Josh Williamson knocking in 4 during an 11-0 rout. Click on the links above for full details.

07-05-09: Valhalla jackets for winter
As the cold weeks of winter start to set in, the soccer school teams for 2009 are proud to be wearing new tracksuits sponsored by Valhalla ice-cream. Photos of the MSS teams in the new kit are below, alongside a photo of some of the younger MSS recruits...

29-04-09: MSS kicks on...
Morton's Soccer School continues to grow. We now have 45 enthusiastic recruits including little Tom Bennett, only 7 years old recently arrived from Western Australia. At the other end of the programme, 15 Year old Hugo Bladel who is in his second year at MSS came off the bench to play for South Hobart’s 1st team in the 3 v 1 win over White Eagles on the 18/4. Great stuff Huges!

26-04-09: Start of the youth season
On Sunday 26th April MSS had two teams kick off the 2009 season under the banner of the South Hobart Football Club. The u13s (playing in u14 division 1) won a close match against Clarence Black 3-2 with Sam Ross scoring all 3 goals (and one for the opposition as well). The u14s (playing in u15 division 1) also won 3-2 against Kingborough, with two goals to Fionn Collins and one to Max Clarke.

25-04-09: Easter holidays
After a busy Easter break the soccer school is now back in full swing with training sessions Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4.15-5.45pm at the South Hobart senior ground on D'Arcy street.

Well done to the MSS boys who represented the state in Canberra in the u13 National Championships: Digby Ayton, Nick Morton, Sam Ross, Karl Otte, and congratulations to all players who returned triumphant with the Merimbula trophy - after 15 years trying this was a great achievement for Coach Spinner Adkins and his team.

30-11-08: Wollongong u13 away trip
Following on from the initial victory on Thursday, the u13 MSS team were in a strong position in Friday's evening's match, ahead 2-0 at half time before the match was prematurely ended by lightning! Perhaps the rest was timely as the next morning the boys played superbly against the u13 Johnny Warren foundation team, looking the more likely victors at 3-2 up, until a late free kick to the opposition resulted in a draw. Congratulations to Ken, Jed, the supporters and all the boys to complete the trip undefeated.

27-11-08: Wollongong u13 away trip

13-11-08: Practice matches.
A useful match for the Wollongong squad yesterday against the TIS u15 girls, the boys coming away with a 2-0 win.
